Single App Mode Vs Autonomous Single App Mode in iPad

Due to the increasing trend of Enterprise Mobility, iPads are used across various service domains like restaurants, hotels, hospitals, schools, colleges & universities, wherein businesses require to take surveys, feedback, information, quizzes, and assessments. For such use-cases, iPads which the businesses are using can be locked into Autonomous Single App Mode with iPad Kiosk App.

What is Autonomous Single App Mode (ASAM)?

Single App Mode (SAM) locks the iPad devices into iPad kiosk mode. That means one particular application will run on the device and let users focus on performing some specific task. That selected app automatically launches itself and runs in the foreground and, along with the devices, will be restricted to a particular function.

But, even though Single App Mode locks down the device to one app, it might not be useful in certain use cases quoted above.

For e.g., to carry out the survey, your company may use particular survey apps on iPads for a specific duration. Then, these devices can be locked into Autonomous Single App Mode, wherein one particular app can be run in SAM for a specific duration and exit once the survey is done. The app that is to be run is first uploaded to the Enterprise Store in Scalefusion, which is a common platform for uploading business apps.

But, even though the Single App Mode (SAM) feature locks down the device to one app, the Autonomous Single App mode allows an app to lock into the Single App Mode and even come out of it. The device will be locked down to the app when the user signs in and released when the user signs out.

However, points to take care of in autonomous mode are –

  • If the app is uninstalled from the Enterprise Store, which is set into Autonomous Single App Mode, it may cause undefined behavior, and to enable the device to function properly, it might have to be restarted.
  • If the application has set itself to run in Autonomous Mode, then further changes to the Device Profile are not applied until the application is out of Autonomous Single App Mode (ASAM) mode.

Thus, by using this feature, a company can choose a subset of allowed applications to set themselves in a SAM whenever they want.
