Enabling GPS Mandate in Passenger Transport Vehicles

The Government of India has mandated the installation of Global Positioning System (GPS) in passenger transport vehicles including taxis and buses by April 2018. As of now, three-wheeler public transport such as auto-rickshaws and electric vehicles have been exempted from this rule.

Ministry of Road Transport and Highways or MORTH made this declaration via Tweet.

Why School Bus GPS Tracking System is required?

The Government has taken cognizance of the requirement and this is the step to ensure the safety of the passengers especially women traveling by public transport and children by school buses. There have been many incidents of reckless driving by school bus drivers and the taxi drivers wherein kids and passengers have lost their lives. As a result of which in urban areas, educational institutes have installed GPS tracking devices for school buses and parents are provided free access to their prescribed school bus tracker app. Additionally, to make transportation even safer, it has been advocated that all drivers, including those of school buses and taxis, should have attended accredited driving schools, ensuring they possess the necessary skills and awareness for safe driving.

Why is GPS Tracking System required for Passenger Transport Vehicles?

Similarly, the larger organizations which provide transportation services to their employees have employed various security systems in their buses or cabs for ensuring the security of women working in their company. However, in smaller towns and rural areas, such steps were far from implementation before the Government gave their stance on it.

Coming back to the mandate, it is to install GPS devices to facilitate location tracking, as well as alert buttons which will send a message to the police control room and the transport department or the managing authority for the vehicles, enabling them to take quick action. The state transport department will be given the responsibility of putting a control system in place for tracking public transport such as auto-rickshaws and electric vehicles.

How Scalefusion can help meet this mandate?

    Passenger Transport Vehicle Tracking Application

The Department of Telecom has made it mandatory for all mobile phones sold in the country from 1st January 2018 to have GPS inbuilt. Additionally, all phones will also need to have a physical panic button – Reference – ( http://pib.nic.in/newsite/printrelease.aspx?relid=142272 ). Hence, the commercial passenger transport vehicle owners, who provide their devices to their drivers can leverage these features by deploying Scalefusion – a Cloud-based mobile device management solution, which can help them track the precise location of their vehicles and get alerts in real-time. In addition to that, they can even restrict the usage which will prevent misuse of the devices and data loss as well. And all the mobile devices deployed in different vehicles can be closely monitored from a unified dashboard.

Scalefusion allows vehicle owners to –

Lock the devices in Kiosk Mode
Real-time location tracking of each passenger vehicle
Setting up a virtual geographical boundary for each vehicle by Geo-Fencing which will send an alert if the vehicle breaches its virtual limit
Get real-time alerts for reporting an accident or any untoward incident with the help of the panic button
All the devices can be remotely monitored, managed and controlled from a central web dashboard

Geo-Fencing and Location Tracking feature facilitate the monitoring team to know the precise location of the vehicles in real-time as well as can also get history reports. Over and above, vehicle owners can set up a virtual boundary for each vehicle in which they are supposed to be driving. If they drive beyond their set limit, MLP will immediately send an alert to the IT admin on the dashboard, notifying the breach. Beyond that, if an accident happens, our MDM Solution will help the commercial vehicle owners to track and find out the location where exactly the accident has happened and report any untoward incident without any delay.

Hence, if you are not yet ready for the mandate, and still contemplating how you can achieve it, we can help you implement our Scalefusion MDM for your vehicles. In addition to the above, there are a number of other Scalefusion features as well, which can facilitate the passenger vehicle owners to ensure efficient transportation management. Its high time, that we leverage the technology for the security of our own people!
