How to block apps on Chromebooks for better security and productivity

Doesn’t it bother you that you have handed out Chromebooks to your team or students, thinking these efficient devices will streamline productivity, but what about the potential security risks?

Let’s say, after a week, instead of work-related tasks, you find gaming apps, endless YouTube binges, and random social media platforms hogging the screens. If only there were a way to block all those unwanted apps, channel focus, and ensure these devices are used the way they were intended.

Solutions like Scalefusion UEM exist to help you do just that.

Why blocking apps on Chromebooks matters

Before jumping into the steps, it’s worth understanding why blocking apps is important for your Chromebook:

    1. Boost productivity
Unrestricted access to apps often leads to distractions. Blocking unnecessary apps ensures users stay focused on tasks, whether it’s employees working on deadlines or students attending online classes.
    2. Enhance security
Unregulated app installations open doors to malware, phishing attacks, and other security threats. Blocking apps minimizes these risks, making your devices safer and compliant with organizational policies.
    3. Reduce bandwidth overload
Unnecessary apps—especially those for streaming and gaming—consume valuable bandwidth. By blocking these apps, you free up internet speed for what truly matters.
    4. Encourage responsible usage
When users know they can’t install every app under the sun, they’re more likely to use Chromebooks responsibly. This reinforces a culture of professionalism and productivity.

Now that we’ve covered the “why,” let’s focus on the “how.”
