Apple Business Manager was Apple’s web portal for deploying and managing Apple devices at scale — enrollment, app and content distribution, and Managed Apple Accounts. In April 2026 Apple replaced it with Biashara ya Apple, which does all of that and adds device management built in by Apple. The mechanics carried over; most of the names changed.

Kuchukua Muhimu

  • Dumisha Afya ya Uandikishaji na Ujumuishaji: IT teams should regularly renew Service Tokens (formerly server tokens), verify domains, review device assignments, connect authorized resellers, and monitor synchronization between Apple Business Manager and MDM.

Apple Business Manager no longer exists as a separate product. On 14 April 2026, Apple folded it — along with Apple Business Essentials and Apple Business Connect — into a single free platform called Biashara ya Apple, which for the first time includes device management built in by Apple.

This guide covers Apple Business Manager as it worked, what each part of it is called now, and what changed for IT teams who ran on it. If you’re setting things up fresh today, start with Biashara ya Apple badala yake.

Apple Business Manager was Apple’s free web portal for deploying and managing Apple devices at scale. It brought together what had previously been two separate programs — the Device Enrollment Program (DEP) and the Volume Purchase Program (VPP) — into one place.

It ran from 2018 until April 2026, gaining tighter MDM integrations, more flexible enrollment options and support for identity providers such as Microsoft Entra ID along the way. Apple then replaced it with Apple Business. Everything it did still exists — enrollment, app licensing, identity — it simply lives inside a broader platform now, alongside device management Apple provides itself.

With Apple Business Manager, organizations could:

  • Automate device enrollment: Enroll devices into an MDM solution automatically, without manual setup.
  • Manage Apple accounts: Create and manage Managed Apple Accounts — called Managed Apple IDs at the time — for employees to access Apple services.

Under Apple Business Manager the division was clean: ABM handled which devices and licenses belonged to your organization; a separate Usimamizi wa Kifaa cha Simu (MDM) platform handled what those devices actually did. ABM could enroll a Mac automatically, but it could not set a passcode policy, push a configuration, or lock a device to a single app. You needed both.

That is no longer automatically true. Apple Business includes a built-in device management service. For an Apple-only organization running current operating systems, basic enrollment, configuration and app distribution no longer require a separate product. Where a third-party platform still earns its place is anything beyond that: managing non-Apple devices, conditional access, compliance reporting, remote troubleshooting and kiosk lockdown.

Here is how the two worked together under Apple Business Manager, and what carried over:

  3. Creating Managed Apple Accounts: ABM let organizations create Managed Apple Accounts for employees, linked to the MDM system so businesses could control access to corporate apps and data — keeping work and personal Apple Accounts separate.

The honest summary: the question used to be ambayo MDM to pair with Apple Business Manager. It is now iwapo you need one on top of what Apple gives you — and for most organizations running more than one operating system, the answer has not changed. See Usimamizi wa kifaa cha Apple for how that layer works in practice.

What everything is called now

Apple has not published a migration guide or a naming map. If your runbooks and internal documentation still use the old terms, this is the translation:

The bottom three predate the Apple Business transition. They are included because they are the terms most likely to be stale in older documentation.

What Apple confirmed, and what it did not

Apple’s public statement on the transition is short. It confirms that Apple Business Essentials, Apple Business Manager and Apple Business Connect “will no longer be available once Apple Business launches”, and that existing Apple Business Connect data — locations, place cards, photos, organization and account details — migrates automatically. Muhimu za Biashara ya Apple customers stopped being charged the monthly management fee.

Apple has published no equivalent guidance for Apple Business Manager accounts specifically, and there is no official migration guide. Widely repeated claims that ABM accounts carried over automatically come from third parties rather than Apple.

If you ran on Apple Business Manager and have not checked since April, verify your organization’s state directly at business.apple.com rather than assuming either way.

What Apple Business Manager did — and where each piece lives now

If you are working from a runbook written for Apple Business Manager, this is the translation. Every capability below still exists. Most of them simply answer to a different name.

1. Zero-touch deployment

A device ordered from Apple or an authorized reseller arrived already tied to your organization. Switch it on and it enrolled into your MDM and applied its policies before anyone signed in — no imaging, no manual setup, nothing for IT to touch. This was the reason most organizations adopted Apple Business Manager in the first place, and it worked the same way for Mac as for iPhone and iPad.

sasa: unchanged. It is called Automated Device Enrollment (ADE), the name it took when the Device Enrollment Program was folded in — well before 2026.

2. Managed Apple Accounts

Organizations could issue Apple accounts they owned rather than asking staff to sign in with personal ones. Company data stayed under company control, worked with company security rules, and the account could be reclaimed when someone left.

sasa: unchanged, but renamed. Managed Apple ID became Managed Apple Account before 2026, unrelated to this transition.

3. Apps and content in bulk

Buy an app once for 500 devices and distribute it without an App Store password on each one. Licences belonged to the organization, not the employee, so they could be reclaimed and reassigned when people changed roles or left.

sasa: unchanged. This became Apps and Books back in 2019, when the Volume Purchase Program was absorbed.

4. BYOD without owning the device

Employee-owned iPhones and iPads could carry work apps and accounts in a separate container, with IT managing only the work side. Personal photos, messages and apps stayed invisible to the organization, which is what made BYOD acceptable to employees in the first place.

sasa: account-driven User Enrollment, still the enrollment path for personal devices.

5. Identity provider connections

Apple Business Manager connected to Microsoft Entra ID and Google Workspace so staff signed in with credentials they already had, and access ended when their directory account did — no separate offboarding step to forget.

sasa: carried over, and still expanding.

6. The one thing it never did

Apple Business Manager was not an MDM. It delivered devices to a management platform and handed them over. It could not enforce a passcode, push a configuration profile, wipe a lost device or report on compliance. Every organization using it needed a separate MDM alongside — that was not a gap in anyone’s setup, it was how the product worked.

That is the actual change. Apple Business includes device management Apple runs itself, at no cost. For an Apple-only fleet with modest requirements, that may now be enough on its own. For a mixed fleet — Android and Windows devices, conditional access, compliance reporting, kiosk lockdown — a third-party platform still does the work Apple’s built-in management does not.

How devices actually got into Apple Business Manager

Adding a device is not the same as creating an account — a distinction worth making, because the two are often confused. Devices reached your organization’s inventory in one of two ways, and the same two routes apply in Apple Business today.

1. Bought through Apple or an authorized reseller

This is the normal path. Your organization has an Nambari ya Mteja wa Apple — or a reseller ID for non-Apple channels — which you link in the portal. Devices bought under that number appear in your device inventory automatically. There are no serial numbers to type in.

2. Added manually with Apple Configurator

For devices bought outside those channels — secondhand, or through a channel that does not report to Apple — Apple Configurator on a Mac can add them to your organization.

Once a device is in inventory, you assign it to a device management service (what used to be called an MDM server), and it enrolls automatically the first time it is switched on. The most common reason a device does not appear is that the reseller relationship was never linked, or the device was bought under a different customer number — see the troubleshooting section below.

Creating an organization account, verifying a domain and assigning admin roles are setup steps rather than device steps. For how those work in Apple Business today, see the Apple Business setup guide.

Apple Business Manager offered three enrollment methods. All three carry over to Apple Business under current names:

  • Now called account-driven User Enrollment, keeping work and personal data separate on a device the employee owns.

Best practices for Managed Apple Accounts

1. Always use Managed Apple Accounts for work devices

Managed Apple Accounts provide better control over company data and ensure that security and privacy policies are enforced. This helps maintain a clear separation between work and personal information, ensuring company data remains secure.

2. Link Managed Apple Accounts to your organization’s identity provider

To make user management easier, connect Managed Apple Accounts with your organization’s identity provider, such as Microsoft Entra ID or Google Workspace. This allows for smoother login experiences, easier access management, and better integration with enterprise tools.

3. Educate employees on the importance of keeping work and personal accounts separate

It’s essential to inform employees about the risks of mixing personal and work data. Ensuring that work devices use Managed Apple Accounts helps keep everything secure and organized. Employees should understand that maintaining this separation is crucial to prevent data leakage or privacy issues.

4. Use MDM for ongoing management of Managed Apple Accounts

Integrating MDM solutions like Scalefusion with Managed Apple Accounts allows for continuous oversight and management of devices. With Scalefusion, you can apply and enforce security policies, track device compliance, and remotely manage devices tied to Managed Apple Accounts. This keeps devices in line with company standards and regulations.

Connecting Apple Business to your MDM

If you set this up under Apple Business Manager, the mechanism has not changed — only the labels. You still upload a public key certificate to Apple, Apple issues a token in return, and you upload that token to your management platform.

What moved: the tokeni ya seva sasa ni Service Token, MDM server you assigned devices to is now a device management service, and it lives under Devices > Management Services badala ya Settings > MDM Servers.

For the current step-by-step, see how to connect Apple Business with Scalefusion.

1. Vifaa havionekani katika Kidhibiti Biashara cha Apple

  • Hakikisha vifaa vilinunuliwa kutoka kwa wauzaji walioidhinishwa.
  • Unganisha yako Nambari ya Mteja wa Apple or reseller ID to the organization account — this is the object that connects purchases to your inventory.

  • Check whether the Service Token (formerly the server token) has expired.
  • Refresh the token and verify connectivity. Service Tokens expire after one year, and also need replacing when a new public key is uploaded, a new token is generated, the account password changes, or the person who downloaded it leaves the organization.

4. Migogoro ya uandikishaji wa watumiaji

  • Educate users on the difference between a Managed Apple Account (formerly Managed Apple ID) and a personal Apple Account.
  • Tumia vikwazo vya MDM kutekeleza uandikishaji sahihi.

Why Apple Business Manager mattered

For eight years Apple Business Manager was where Apple device deployment started. It turned a box arriving at a new hire’s desk into a configured, policy-bound device without IT touching it, and it gave organizations an identity layer of their own instead of asking staff to sign in with personal Apple Accounts.

Apple Business inherits all of that and adds device management Apple runs itself. What it does not inherit is everything a mixed fleet needs — Android and Windows devices, conditional access, compliance reporting, remote troubleshooting. That is the gap a third-party MDM still fills.

Maswali ya Maswali

1. Je, Apple Business Manager ni bure kutumia?

Yes — and Apple Business is free too. The difference is what you get: Apple Business includes built-in device management, which Apple Business Manager never did.

That changed in April 2026. Apple Business — the platform that replaced Apple Business Manager — now includes a built-in device management service, so basic enrollment, configuration and app distribution no longer require a separate MDM. A third-party platform still matters for anything beyond that: managing non-Apple devices, conditional access, compliance reporting, remote troubleshooting and kiosk lockdown.

3. Je Apple Business Manager inasaidia BYOD?

Yes — through account-driven User Enrollment, which keeps work and personal data separate on a device the employee owns.

4. How do I migrate from Apple Business Manager to Apple Business?

Apple published no migration guide. What it did confirm: Apple Business Connect data migrates automatically, and Apple Business Essentials customers stopped being charged the monthly management fee after 14 April 2026. For Apple Business Manager accounts specifically Apple has said nothing, so check your organization’s state directly at business.apple.com. The MDM connection itself uses the same certificate-and-token exchange, under new names.

5. Is Apple Business available globally?

Yes — Apple lists availability in over 200 countries and regions. Apple Business Manager was already global; the built-in device management is the part that expanded reach.

Apple Business Manager was free, and Apple Business is free too — there are no subscription fees or setup costs. Costs appear elsewhere: a third-party MDM for cross-platform or advanced management, and the apps and content you buy through Apps and Books.

7. What happened to Apple Business Manager?

Apple replaced it on 14 April 2026 with Apple Business, which also absorbed Apple Business Essentials and Apple Business Connect. Enrollment and app distribution still work the same way; the names changed. The MDM server became a device management service, the server token became a Service Token, and Settings > MDM Servers akawa Devices > Management Services.
