Was Apple School Manager discontinued too?

It remains a separate product, and Apple has continued shipping features to it through 2025 and 2026 — including several that did not exist when most guides to it were written.

Apple’s own support documentation treats the two as parallel platforms rather than one superseding the other — there is a live article covering what to do if either Apple School Manager or Apple Business asks you to approve new terms.

If your school runs on Apple School Manager, nothing has been taken away. The changes worth knowing about are additions, and a set of names that quietly changed underneath. Both are covered below. If you also manage devices on the business side, here is what happened to Apple Business Manager.

What Apple School Manager is

Apple School Manager is Apple’s free web portal for K–12 districts and higher education. It does three jobs: it gets school-owned Apple devices enrolled into a management platform automatically, it creates and controls the accounts students and staff sign in with, and it buys and distributes apps and books at scale.

It is not, by itself, a device management system. It hands devices to one and manages identity and content; the ongoing configuration, policy and monitoring happen in your MDM. Scalefusion supports Apple School Manager for exactly that handover.

What Apple School Manager does

Switch one on and it enrols into your management platform and applies its configuration before a student ever signs in — no imaging, no manual setup, no touching the device after unboxing. On the education discount, one thing worth knowing: Apple lets developers offer their app at 50% of list price to educational institutions buying 20 or more. Apple Classroom and Schoolwork

Both are teacher-facing rather than IT-facing, which matters for rollout. A teacher who cannot get Classroom to see the iPads in their room will raise it as a device problem, and the cause is usually class data that never made it across from the SIS.

One iPad, many students, each with their own account, files and settings. A student signs in with their Managed Apple Account and gets their own environment back. This is the feature that makes cart-based iPad deployments practic.

What’s new in Apple School Manager since 2025

Apple has shipped steadily to Apple School Manager. From Apple’s own release notes:

• API accounts (June 2025) — Administrators can create API accounts that applications use to access organization data programmatically, rather than everything going through the web portal.
• Migrating devices between device management services (June 2025) — devices can be moved to a new management service, with enrollment enforcement deadlines. This is the one worth knowing about if you are reconsidering your MDM. Until it landed, switching platform mid-year was disruptive enough that most schools simply did not. If your current platform has been a constraint — no Chromebook coverage, no web filtering, a renewal coming up — the migration path is materially easier than it was. Here is what to weigh before switching MDM providers.
• Sign-in restrictions (September 2025) — organization-owned devices can be limited so users may only sign in with a Managed Apple Account from the same organization.
• Password resets via iforgot.apple.com (October 2025), with role-based permissions controlling who can perform them.
• TestFlight access (October 2025) — Managed Apple Account users other than Students can be invited to beta test applications.
• Shared payment method for Apps and Books (November 2025) — one payment method anyone with purchasing privileges can use.
• AppleCare and warranty visibility (November 2025) — Administrators and Device Enrollment Managers can see coverage status for managed devices.
• MAC addresses (December 2025) — Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Ethernet addresses visible for organization-owned Macs, which matters for network access control.
• iulie 2026 — Apple added eight deployment guidance topics covering strategy, privacy compliance, scope, success metrics, team structure, network preparation and content filtering.

Setting up Apple School Manager

Înregistrează-te at school.apple.com. You provide your institution’s details and a verification contact; Apple contacts that person to confirm the institution is what it claims to be before the account is activated.

Link your device purchases. Devices reach your inventory automatically if they were ordered after 1 March 2011 and bought through one of Apple’s channels. Buying direct from Apple means using an enrolled, verified Număr de client Apple, with your legal name and mailing address matching its records. Buying through an Apple Authorised Reseller or an authorised cellular carrier means they link the device to their Reseller Number, which you add to your list of approved suppliers — and their sales history determines the actual eligibility date.

Anything bought outside those channels can still be added manually with Configurator Apple on a Mac. That covers iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Vision Pro, and Apple TV — Apple TV only on models with Ethernet.

Check your browsers. Apple School Manager runs in Safari 16.6 or later, Chrome 138 or later, Edge 138 or later, and Firefox 140 or later on macOS 11 or later and Windows; on iPadOS 16.6 or later it supports Safari and Chrome. Worth checking before an admin discovers it on results day.

Connect your student data. Apple School Manager can pull accounts and classes from a Student Information System (SIS) directly, from an SFTP feed, or through an identity provider. Federation with ID Microsoft Access (formerly Azure Active Directory) and Google Workspace lets students and staff sign in to Apple services with credentials they already have, using SCIM or federated authentication.

UK and European schools will recognise this as the MIS integration question — the same job, different acronym.

Assign devices to your management service and they enrol on first boot.

What Apple School Manager costs

Apple School Manager is free. There is no subscription, no per-device fee, and no licence to buy.

The costs sit elsewhere, and it is worth being clear about which:

• The devices themselves — the largest line by a wide margin.
• Apps and books you choose to buy. Many education apps are free; paid ones are bought per licence.
• A device management platform, if you need one beyond what Apple School Manager itself does. Apple School Manager handles enrollment, identity and content — it does not do ongoing policy management, monitoring or web filtering.

Worth pricing that last one against your whole fleet rather than the Apple part of it. Most schools run Chromebooks or Windows devices alongside iPads, and two management platforms cost more than one — in licence fees, and in the admin time of running both.

Where a third-party MDM fits in a school

Apple School Manager delivers devices to a management platform and hands them over. What happens after that is the MDM’s job, and in a school that list is specific:

• Content and web filtering. For US districts, filtering is tied to E-Rate funding under the Children’s Internet Protection Act. Apple School Manager does not do it.
• Student data handling. Managed Apple Accounts hold records that fall under FERPA, which governs who may access a student’s education records and under what conditions. No product delivers FERPA compliance on its own — but the platform holding those accounts determines how much of the obligation you can actually evidence.
• Ongoing configuration — settings, restrictions and app policies that change by year group, room or term.
• Mixed fleets. Very few schools are all-Apple. Chromebooks and Windows devices sit alongside iPads in most districts, and Apple School Manager covers none of them.
• Monitoring and remote support — knowing which devices are out of policy, and fixing them without collecting them from classrooms.
